The end is nigh?

So, it is the 21st of December 2012 and the end of the Mayan calender.... Australia has survived the date so does that mean we are all off the hook??

Just in case, I felt my slouchy tee with the word 'BOOM' emblazoned across the front was appropriate for today as one of the theories as to how we could meet our end is a dark comet slamming into the earth.

Just in case you're interested; the theory is that as the comet is dark and speeds through space it makes it hard to be seen which is what could have stopped experts dedecting it. When it hits it would kill those in the impact zone and immediate area instantly but for the rest of us it would throw up so much dust into the atmosphere that billions of us could suffer a slow death. Huge quantities of dust would cause an 'eternal winter' in which the sun would be obscured leading to crops failing causing a mass famine (Happy Friday!)

Other theories as to how we could meet our end include a similar demise as the latter but the cause of the death dust would be the erruption of a super volcano.
A super erruption would again block out the sun and cause famine but initially the molten lava and dust would kill off thousands. (No seriously.... Happy Friday!!)

Further ideas include a vast escape of methane gas caused by an underwater landslide, a plague of cancers, startling climate change.... The list is endless. I don't want to go anymore in case I have killed off your christmas spirit and made you open that bottle of Baileys you had bought for your mother in law.

In all seriousness, these catastrophies are all possible at any time and lets not forget after a reign of 165 million years the dinosaurs were killed off by a freak asteroid that hit earth. We homo sapians have only been around for 200, 000 years so it would be nice to think we have a bit of time left yet! I do believe however that such a huge scale disaster would be nigh on impossible to predict.

What we should learn from all this hype and anxiousness (on some peoples part) is that we are very lucky to be here and be living in our free world! Yes there is a recession and yes household bills are rising but for today, breathe in the cold air a little deeper, smile at every stranger you pass and tell those you care about that you love them.

Just because you can. You never know when it all might end!!

Now seriously.... GO HAVE A HAPPY FRIDAY!!! :)
